| Singers bring good karma to the stage THEY'RE at it again. The Numurkah Singers are warming up their vocal chords, practicing their dance moves, and raiding the wardrobe for 1960s-inspired costumes for this year's production, "Good Vibes". Rehearsals for the musical began in earnest in February, with the theatre company well on-track for its first performance on May 24. This year's production will transport audiences into the peace-loving 1960s, where patrons at renowned hippy hang-out "The Psychedelic Cafe" are in the throes of protesting against Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War. Without warning, the town's councillors show up on the doorstep to advise cafe owner, Erica, and her loyal customers and staff that the cafe will be shut down so the council can erect a vivisection laboratory in its place. As if this isn't enough, Erica's boyfriend, Bill, is conscripted into the army, sparking an emotional struggle between the pair, and a conflict between their beliefs and sense of duty. The hippies and the cafe's resident musicians, inspired by the daggy new girl in town, Julie, mount a protest and embark upon a cunning scheme to convince the council to change its mind, while Erica and Bill struggle to reach a decision about how best to deal with Bill's conscription. With some out-of-this-world dance moves, and 14 original songs ranging in style from ballads and gospel, to outright rock, and of course, the "protest song", Good Vibes promises to give its audience exactly that - some good vibes, and a night of toe-tapping and flower power! Good Vibes will open on May 24 at 8pm, with additional performances on May 25 at 2pm, May 30 at 8pm, and May 31 at 2pm and 8pm. |
