Jacinta channels her inner geek

JACINTA Scadden's grandmother used to take her to see all the Numurkah Singers Theatre Inc. productions when she was a child.

Now, as a 16-year-old, Jacinta finds herself on the other side of the velvet curtain, as she prepares for a lead role in this year's Singers production of Good Vibes.

In real life she seems confident and cool, but Jacinta has managed to channel her inner geek to embrace her role as the nerdy new girl in town, Julie, in this 1960s-inspired Australian musical.

Jacinta's flair on the stage comes after she played lead roles in the Nathalia Secondary College's productions of Robin the Hood and Hating Alison Ashley, as well as through her four years of experience with the Singers.

Good Vibes transports audiences back to 1960s Australia, where Julie arrives in town to find patrons at renowned hippy hang-out "The Psychedelic Cafe" in the throes of protesting against Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War.

Without warning, the town's councillors show up on the doorstep to advise cafe owner, Erica, and her loyal customers and staff that the cafe will be shut down so the council can erect a vivisection laboratory in its place.

As if this isn't enough, Erica's boyfriend, Bill, is conscripted into the army, sparking an emotional struggle between the pair, and a conflict between their beliefs and sense of duty.

Julie uses her wit, enthusiasm and intelligence to encourage the hippies and the cafe's resident musicians to mount a protest against the laboratory, whilst embarking upon a cunning scheme to convince the council to change its mind.

All the while, there are hints that love could be in the air for the romantically naive Julie.

Jacinta said she was enjoying the challenge of playing Julie, and was particularly excited by the transformation her character undergoes throughout the play.

"Julie is a very likeable character - she's very intelligent, and has moments of great seriousness, as well as instants of silliness. Most of all, I like her because she's willing to stand up for what she believes in, even if other people ridicule her at first," Jacinta said.

"She's quite melodramatic, and is a bit of a dork, which makes her a fun character."

Good Vibes will open on May 24 at 8pm, with additional performances on May 25 at 2pm, May 30 at 8pm, and May 31 at 2pm and 8pm.
